With three weeks to go, we are pleased with progress, we could do with another few weeks but that is always the way and everyone needs a deadline.
This week is a time for organising our powder coater in kingswood Bristol, our box cover maker in Cardiff and to get our arses into graphics mode.
The Frame and forks are welded, soldered, filed and fettled and now time for some wheel building and those little things like promotional materials and thinking about our 'stand' in the Arnolfini.
Exciting times, our presence at the constructors challenge in the Arnolfini is an exciting time for our 'Rodford Utility Bicycles' for sure, but it's bigger than that. Phil and Tess, the organisers of Bespoked, have talked for a few years now about having something in the show with some real everyday life relevance. The craft and skills evident in the handbuilt bikes are lovely and great to see but handbuilt cargobikes don't get commissioned very often (if at all), so how to get more Cargobikes into the show?
The constructors challenge is massive in my opinion not just for the 5 diverse people and businesses that are involved this year in building these beasts of burden. It's massive because it recognises a whole new exciting genre of bicycles, transport is what bikes were invented for, they changed the way we lived and could arguably have begun globalisation as we know it today. It's a marvelous thing to be facilitated to move in this car centric world without actually having to use a car, and with these bikes it's more possible than ever..
Bicycles, with access to safe cycle routes can give a freedom that was last seen when cars became affordable and our local world became bigger. Now we can have a bicycle that can help reclaim our local world, making smaller journeys easier and less stressful. reducing local traffic and bringing opportunities to share the open world with your kids, your dog, (your bike load of Bread, in Marks breads case).
Cargobikes are wonderful things, with Rodford, we hope to make moving things by bike more possible and more desirable.
Our Cargobikes are handmade in Britain, Rodford Built, come see us at the show. Rob & Steve
